Star Wars-by the 5th-8th Grade Band

Here is a video we put together of the 5th through 8th grade band playing “Highlights from Star Wars” by John Williams and arranged by Paul Cook. This piece was extremely challenging and I wanted our hard work to be commemorated with a video. Thank you to all of our videographers and our amazing Folsom Musicians!

2016 Island County Music Festival

Hey Folsom Friends!

On March 22nd and 23rd thirty-two of our middle school musicians traveled to Alburgh to take part in the Island County Music Festival. Andy Gagnon from Stowe Middle School conducted the band, and Melissa Towle from Colchester High School conducted the chorus. Folsom set an outstanding example musically and as students in another school. The days were long, and our students were tired, but their handwork paid off because the concert sounded fantastic. Ms. Kauffeld is so proud and thankful for all of their help during the two days, we look forward to hosting the festival at Folsom next year!

Select Band Pieces-Please Listen!

Hello Middle School Select Band Members!

So sorry we had to miss our first rehearsal this morning. In the coming week I’d like you to listen to the two pieces we’ll begin with. Remember, select band will only meet for 25 minutes once a week. This means that you’ll need to be putting in significant work outside of school on this music. You’ll be doing yourself a BIG favor if you get to know this pieces by listening a few times before we meet on Tuesday!

The first piece: Celtic Air and Dance No. 2 by Michael Sweeney.
This is a collection of Folk Tunes. Some of you may recognize “Danny Boy,” which we sang in District Chorus two years ago. ENJOY!

The second piece is the Peter Gunn Theme by Henry Mancini. This is a jazz tune that I played in middle school jazz band. It’s so groovy.

Welcome Back Middle School Families!

Hello Folsom Families!

I’m writing to fill you in on the exciting happenings in the music program! We’re off to a great start this year, we have many students enrolled in band and chorus and the enthusiasm in both groups is contagious. ALL middle school students are welcome to join chorus or begin learning an instrument-it’s never too late! If your child begins studying a new instrument this year they won’t play in the band right away, we’ll get them to a comfortable playing level and then they’ll jump in!

Middle School Band meets on Monday and Fridays during the school days. If your child is studying an instrument they also will have one lesson a week on a three-week rotation. I will send home the lesson schedules once they are set in stone. My recommendation is that most students should leave their instruments at school from Monday to Friday and bring them home over the weekend. The exception being if your child has private lessons during the week, or there is an expectation that they be practicing at home on school nights. My expectation is that if they aren’t practicing at home on school nights, (even 10 minutes a few days a week makes a difference!), they are coming in before school 7:30-7:50 to practice in the music room a few times a week. This year my room is open every morning, so come on in!

Middle School Chorus meets on Wednesdays during school and Thursdays after school until 3:50. There will be a late bus in October, but until then students will need to be picked up.

Students in both groups will have the opportunity to participate in the Island County Music Festival and District Music Festival as well as other performance opportunities that pop up more locally. My philosophy in teaching band and chorus is that they are not ensembles where we are always preparing for a concert. My goals for each are around inspiring musicians who can listen music with a deeper understanding, who create musical ideas and can produce them with their instrument or voice, who work well in a musical community and support each other, and can learn to create a practice ritual. I am working to inspire humans who, when they are adults, feel comfortable singing with their families, or dancing at weddings. Music is much more than yearly concerts, and I hope to show more about how we CREATE music this year, than showing that we are able to play a lot of concert repertoire. (Though that IS a highly important skill and I look forward to diving into the new pieces I’ve picked out for this year!)

Please get in touch with me if you have questions about instrument rentals, buying an instrument, rehearsal times, or anything else! My email is and phone number is (802) 380-9291.

Thank you so much for your support of the music program I’m greatly looking forward to the year ahead!

Districts Day 2!

IMG_0747What a fabulous experience we had in the Districts Concert Band and District Chorus! Our students worked so hard, were tired but proud, and I think, came away having learned a lot. (Hoping to get some video reflections in the coming week.)

Middle School Band Middle School Chorus

District Music Festival Post 1

Hello Folsom Friends!

Here at MVU we are having a blast having just started our second day of rehearsing at the Middle School District Music Festival! You should be extremely proud of how our Folsom students are representing our school. They are professional during rehearsals, focused, working hard, and showing respect to their conductors. They are setting a high standard for their peers from other schools!

Here are some pictures of the groups!
The middle school chorus is conducted by Mrs. Aimee Bushey, who teaches middle and high school chorus in South Burlington. This has been a fun way for our students to connect with her as some will likely attend SB and hopefully keep singing in chorus! Ms. Kauffeld student taught with Mrs. Bushey in her senior year of college and she is SO glad to be able to now share her love for Mrs. Bushey with her Folsom students!

I’m not sure of the band conductor’s name, but she is DYNAMITE! My new instrumental-education hero! It’s harder to get pictures of our kiddos in this group before it is SO BIG! Hooray!!! More pics to come…

Island County Music Festival!

While I’m sitting at the District Music Festival laughing hysterically at everything Mrs. Aimee Bushey says to the chorus, I thought I should probably get some pictures from the Island County Music Festival up on the blog!

We were SO lucky to have Mr. Andy Smith from Charlotte Central School conduct our middle school band. Ms. Kauffeld was lucky enough to spend two weeks student teaching with Mr. Smith during her senior year of college. He’s an incredible teacher, music, and human. The band music was very challenging, especially for our instrumentalists that just began this year! But our students worked hard, coming in to practice before school and working with each other to figure out their parts.

Our chorus conductor is another friend of Ms. Kauffeld’s, Mr. Aram Barsumian! He teaches at Williamstown Elementary and Middle school. He is a terrific trombone player and contra-dancer! Our chorus music was difficult, but Folsom represented our school SO well by being very prepared and professional in their work that day. Oh, and there were some important human knots.

Important Info for Middle School re: Music Festivals

Hi Folsom Musician Families!

Happy New Year and welcome back from vacation! It’s been exciting to hear about the musical experiences your kiddos had over break, whether they went to see “Into the Woods,” received solo books for Christmas, or just spent great amounts of time playing their instruments and singing!

I want to let you know about two important and exciting events that are fast approaching. Both of these experience allow our students to perform at a high level that comes with playing and singing in a bigger group of musicians. Attending these festivals better prepares our students for a typical high school music ensemble experience. (I am still friends with musicians I met at music festivals in middle school!)

The Island County Music Festival will take place on March 4th and 5th  at Grand Isle School. This is a chance for musicians from all island schools to come together to form one band and one chorus under two excellent directors from other VT schools! Students are able to participate in BOTH band and chorus. March 4th, a Wednesday, will be the band rehearsal day, and Thursday will be the chorus rehearsal day. Thursday’s rehearsal is followed by a band dress rehearsal and a joint concert that evening at 5:30 pm at Grand Isle, families should plan to attend as 1. There is no return transportation for that evening and 2. The work they put in and the music they create is remarkable!

While I’m not requiring that our Middle School Chorus and Band members attend this festival it is highly encouraged and it would be a shame if a student missed this great opportunity. Last year we had 100% participation, let’s keep up the tradition!

The District Music Festival will take place on March 27th and 28th at Missisquoi Valley High School. Students, sadly, must choose between participating in the 6th-7th grade band or the 5th-8th grade chorus. This festival is for students who are looking for an extra challenge and a chance to perform with the top musicians from all the middle schools in our Music District. It is two days of hard work, but the end result is stunning.  I believe the concert will be at 2pm on Saturday the 28th at MVU, I will confirm on a permission form that will come home soon. I will be collecting names of students who are interested in participating in the District Festival this Thursday and Friday, if possible, please look at your family calendars to see if these dates are doable for your family at this point.

**We travel as a group to both festivals, and home after the first day of rehearsal, but with both festivals students need to have transportation home AFTER the concert.

As always, call, text, or write with any questions! (802) 380-9291

Thank you so much, I am thrilled to have the chance to bring our musicians into the bigger music world!
